6- THE HOLY
SPIRIT LIVES IN THE HEART OF BELIEVERS.
WORKINGS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
THE HOLY SPIRIT
BRINGS CONVICTION OF SIN.
John 16:8- Jesus speaking of the Holy Spirit said, "And when
he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and
Reprove is the Greek word- el-eng'-kho
which means to Convict, To make known one's faults, To expose sin with
the thought of shame.
Without the convicting power of the Holy Spirit along with the word of
God; sinners would have no
God given knowledge of their sinful, lost condition and their need to
be born again by God's grace! In fact it takes all three members of the
Godhead to perfect salvation to the lost.
2- THE HOLY SPIRIT REVEALS WHO GOD IS.
Through the preaching of God's word the Holy Spirit reveals that God
the Father loved sinners so much that he gave the ultimate
sacrifice in the person of His Son to be the propitiation for sin. 1
John 4:10- "Herein is love, not
that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the
propitiation for our sins".
3- THE HOLY SPIRIT REVEALS WHO JESUS IS.
(A)- The Holy Spirit reveals from God's word that Jesus gave
himself a ransom for the sins of the world when
he shed his innocent blood on the cross.
(1)- Galations 1:4 speaking of Jesus- "Who gave
himself for our sins".
(2)- 1 Tim. 2:6 speaking of Jesus- "Who
gave himself a ransom for all".
(3)- Titus 2:14-
"Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity",
(B)- Sinners can never understand how God
until it is revealed to them by the Spirit of God.
1 Cor. 2:14- "But the natural man
receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness
unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually
(C)- God the Holy Spirit convicts of sin and points
calvary's lamb as their only substitute for sin. When a sinner
realizes his condition along with a repentant heart and believes that
paid it all and arose from the dead while asking the Lord to come
into their heart to live forever, He or She is born again and their
names are written in the Lamb's book of life in heaven.
John 15:26- "But when the
Comforter is come, whom I
will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which
proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me".
4- HE PLACES THE BELIEVER INTO THE BODY OF
1 Cor. 12:13- "For
by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or
Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink
into one Spirit".
In the dispensation of
grace which began after Jesus paid the supreme sacrifice for all men on
the cross and was raised alive from the grave, the veil in the temple
was rent from top to bottom which broke down the middle wall of
patrition between God and mankind and by which Jews and Gentiles alike
have access to heaven through the shed blood of Christ.
5- THE HOLY SPIRIT SEALS THE
Ephesians 1:13- "In whom ye also
trusted, after that
ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also
after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the holy Spirit of promise",
Ephesians 4:30- "And grieve not the holy Spirit of
God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption".
Those who think you can
lose your salvation need to understand that it is not up to you to keep
but God has placed a seal upon each child of God and is protecting that
seal unto the day we are raptured and meet our Lord in the air. That is
the reason we Baptist preach and teach eternal security for the born
John 3:6- "That
which is born of of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the
Spirit is spirit".
1 Corinthians 3:16- "Know ye not that ye are the temple of
God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you"?
As soon as a person repents of his or her sins
and ask Christ into their heart they become the temple of God's Holy
Colossians 1:27- "To whom God
would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among
the gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory":
If you don't have the
Holy Spirit of God living in your heart, you are not saved. I will
never forget the time my family and I moved to a small town in Alaska
and a group of Jehovah (false) witnesses came by with the idea of
us members of their group. I knew what they believed, that the Holy
wasn't a person of the Godhead. They only recognize God the Father and
Jesus but they don't think Jesus is God either but only a good man.
The elderly lady brought a younger lady whom she was training and she
began to make her presentation about sharing the "Kingdom" as they call
it after which I made
the remark that I understand that you don't believe the Holy Spirit is
God and the elderly lady said that they did not. I quoted her Romans
8:9- "But ye are not in the
flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.
Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his". What this verse means is that they need
to be saved and the elderly lady told the younger one to come on and
let us go! They were ready to get away from God's truth and on to their
deceptive thoughts but hell is going to be hot for people like this who
God's saving grace or think that they have a better plan than God gave
us from his word!
THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS BELIEVERS FOR SERVICE.
Ephesians 5:18- "Be ye filled
with the Spirit".
This is not the indwelling of the Holy Spirit but
the filling of the Spirit! When a person is saved he or she has all of
Holy Spirit but the Holy Spirit doesn't have all of the person until he
or she is totally surrendered to the Holy Spirit's leadership!
Acts 1:8- "But ye shall receive
power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be
witnesses unto me both in Jursalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria,
and unto the uttermost part of the earth".
8- THE HOLY SPIRIT INTERCEEDS FOR
US IN PRAYER.
Romans 8:26- "Likewise
the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should
pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us
with groanings which cannot be uttered".
As a matter of fact we could not pray in a manner
that is pleasing to God without the help of the Holy Spirit.
AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT.
(1)- The Holy Spirit is grieved by worldly believers.
He can be grieved by loose living of those he indwells.
Ephesians 4:30- "And grieve not
the holy Spirit of God".
(2)- The Holy Spirit
can be resisted by unbelievers.
Jesus was addressing the Jewish people who claimed to know God by
claiming that Abraham was their father but Jesus made them aware that
they had resisted Him in a very real sense.
Acts 7:51- "Ye stiffnecked and
uncircumcized in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as
your fathers did, so do ye".
(3)- Despite is done to
the Holy Spirit by a profession without the New Birth.
Hebrews 10:29- "Of how much sorer
punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden
under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant,
wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite
unto the Spirit of grace".
Here is a passage where
those who believe the Bible teaches a person can lose their salvation
often quote but careful study plainly shows that this passage is making
known that the keeping of the Law of Moses with the animal sacrifices
can never take away sin and those who think they can work their way to
heaven are doing despite to the Spirit of grace.
Hewbews 10:1- "For the law having
a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things,
can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year
continually make the comers thereunto perfect".
Where do you fit into the workings of the
Holy Spirit? Have you been convicted of your sins by Him? Have you
repented of those sins and believed that Jesus paid it all at Calvary
and have you ask him to forgive you and to come into your heart to live
forever? Have you made a public profession of Christ as Lord? Have you
been baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost as
a result of that profession of faith in Jesus as Lord? Are you filled
with the Spirit of God and followering his leadership for your life? If
any of these categories are missing from your life; you need to make it
