CHRISTIAN GIVING
THE TRUTH ABOUT TITHING

By Preacher James Tyson
2 Corinthians 9:7

CHRISTIAN GIVING DEFINED.
Preachers who learn and admit the truth will not change their preaching on the subject of tithing because they fear the consequences of telling the truth after preaching error for so long.  The Old Testament way is a 10% demand system but the New Testament way is found in 2 Corinthians 9:7- "As a man purposeth in his heart, so let him give".

Before you turn me off and brand me as a heretic please hear what God has to say about the subject from His Word. We are going to look at the Old Testament Tithe and the New Testament method of giving as God revealed from His word, to support the gospel ministry.

TITHING EXPLAINED.
It literally means, "a tenth part". It was first taught to the Hebrew people in The
Old Testament for the maintenance of the Priesthood and the Operation of The House of God. You will see later in the sermon that the New Testament Church has a different command from God about giving to support the ministry.

We need to remember at this point that we can't pull the subject of tithing out of  Old Testament scripture and use the part we want while disregarding the part of the passage we don't like. The verses that lead up to the commandment for tithing from the book of Nehemiah start out with instructions for marriage and Christian lending which would be all inclusive along with teaching the principal of tithing.

1- THE OLD TESTAMENT TEACHING .
Tithing was only part of a multi-step process.

The teaching on tithing from the book of Nehemiah has multiple parts concerning consecrated living for the people of God. Many times we try and use the part about tithing and ignore the most important aspect of the scripture. You can not separate tithing from the rest of the instructions. You have to take all of them or none!

(1)- THE PROCESS CONSISTED OF CONSECRATED LIVING.
NEHEMIAH 10:30- "
And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, not take their daughters for our sons:" Here is where Pastors need to be concerned; where Church members are marrying unbelievers while ruining their lives with abuse and ungodly living. These marriages produce children who do not know God. How many of you have refused to give your daughter to the man she wanted to marry because he wasn't a Christian? How many wouldn't permit your son to chose a wife from the world system even though this is taught in the New Testament as well as the Old Testament? God commands Christians not to unequally yolk together with unbelievers while the method of providing financing for the New Testament Church is not taught as tithing in the new testament.

(2)- THE OLD TESTAMENT ALSO MADE IT UNLAWFUL TO BUY OR SELL ON THE SABBATH.
Another part of the scripture where tithing is first mentioned teaches that it is unlawful to buy or sell on the Lord's day. Nehemial 10:31- "And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the extraction of every debt".

Here is where our forefathers got what was called, "The blue law" which forbade businesses to operate on Sunday, (The Lord's Day). Most pastors ignore this admonition from God's Old Testament rules which is one of the handwriting of ordinances listed along with tithing. You drive your automobile to the Gas station and use their services without apology on The Lord's Day! You don't mind making your favorite restaurant stay open on The Lord's Day so you and your group can gather after church for food and fellowship! What kind of message is that sending to a lost and dying world who expect you to represent God on planet earth?

THE OLD TESTAMENT PROCESS INSTRUCTED BANKERS TO FORGIVE DEBTS EVERY SEVENTH YEAR.
Nehemiah 10:31- "And that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt". This scripture instructs bankers and lenders to forgive every debt on the seventh year. Why then are you still paying on a 30 year mortgage while your banker friend sits next to you in church?

(3)- THE PROCESS FORBADE  INTEREST ON A LOAN TO A CHRISTIAN.
During the years I pastored a mission church in Alaska; we were told of a christian banker that resigned his job because he read in God's word where he was instructed in Lev. 25:36- to "not collect usury" from a brother  which means that he was not to collect interest from another christian. How many of you are paying interest or charging interest on loans? Why is it that we want to place a rule on people called tithing and leave off the other rules that accompany it from scripture? Modern preachers have taken the part of God's word that suits their fancy and used it while refusing the greater part that needs to be addressed!

2- NEW TESTAMENT TEACHINGS ARE DIFFERENT FOR THE DISPENSATION OF GRACE.

(1)- THE DAY IS CHANGED FROM SATURDAY TO SUNDAY.
(A)- NEW TESTAMENT.
1 Corinthians 16:2- "Upon the first day of the week" (Sunday).

(B)- OLD TESTAMENT.
Exodus 20:8- "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy".

(2)-
THE METHOD WAS CHANGED FROM TITHING TO GIVING.
(A)- NEW TESTAMENT.
2 Corinthians 9:7- "as a man purposeth in his heart so let him give". That doesn't mean that Christians have an excuse not to support the work of the Lord and the Ministry where they are being blessed. It does mean however that God's Holy Spirit indwells every born again believer and he gives instructions to each person as to how much to give and how often to give.

(B)- OLD TESTAMENT.
Ordinances called tithing were used instead of spiritual leadership.
Nehemiah 10:32- "
Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;"  This ordinance is for the maintenance of the house of God and there is nothing wrong with that but the New Testament instructs believers to give on the first day of the week as God has prospered them and for it to be willingly, not of a necessity but as the Holy Spirit leads- 2 Cor. 9:7. You can't get church doctrine from the Old Testament book of Malachi either where many pastors brow beat their people by saying that they are robbing God if they don't do as they say!

(3)- THE SACRIFICE WAS CHANGED FROM ANIMALS TO CALVARY'S LAMB.
(A)- NEW TESTAMENT;
John 1:29- " Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world".
Hebrews 10:12- "But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God".

(B)- OLD TESTAMENT.
Various offerings were used.
Nehemiah 10:33-
"For the shewbread, and for the continual meat
offering, and for the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make an atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God." How many of you pastors are buying shewbread and animals to sacrifice for the atonement of sin ? It looks like some of you thought that the saturday barbecue at church was god's instruction for the meat offering in Nehemiah 10:33. Please get with the dispensation of grace and leave the handwritting of ordinances nailed to the cross where Jesus left them!

(4)- CASTING LOTS HAS BEEN CHANGED TO WILLING WORKERS.
(A)- NEW TESTAMENT.
2 Cor. 8:5- "But first gave their own selves unto the Lord, and unto us by the will of God".
(B)- OLD TESTAMENT.
Nehemiah 10:34-
"And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law:" Many pastors speak out against gambling so I know that you are going to have a problem with Nehemiah 10:34 while you and the other pastors in your fellowship cast lots to see which of you is going to start up your chain saw and go out and cut some wood for the offering.

(5)- BRINGING FARM COMMODITIES TO CHURCH HAS BEEN CHANGED.
(A)- NEW TESTAMENT.
1 Cor. 16:2- " Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God has prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come".

(B)- OLD TESTAMENT.
Nehemiah 10:35-
"And to bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of the LORD:" I suppose the church needs to set up a storage facility for the farm products you bring into the church! This is where some ministers get the false doctrine of storehouse tithing for New testament believers.

The way the ministry is supported and the church financed has been changed.
(A)- NEW TESTAMENT.
1 Cor. 9:13-14- " Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? And they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar. Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel".

(B)- THE OLD TESTAMENT WAY.
Bringing your firstborn to the priest has been changed.
Nehemiah 10:36-
"Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:" Your firstborn child belongs to the pastor for service pertaining to the church. Also the first animal from  any of your farming operations belongs to the pastor which is his pay for services rendered. I don't know what God expects him to do about the "Buick" payment.

NEHEMIAH 10:37-
"And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage."
All these scriptures are interrelated to tithing and you can not remove one without removing the entire principal but Jesus removed it all at Calvary.

(A)- THE NEW TESTAMENT WAY.
Col. 2:14- "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to the cross".

(B)- THE OLD TESTAMENT WAY was described as an ordinance which Jesus removed at Calvary.
Nehemiah 10:32-
Describes the tithe as an ordinance."Also we made
ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;"

(A)- THE NEW TESTAMENT WAY.
After the transition from Law to grace; God's word instructs us in First Corinthians 3:16-
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" This gives every born again believer the ability to discern what God wants them to do and to give as The Spirit leads them.

The doctrine for Spirit led people concerning giving is found in. 1 Cor. 16:1-2.
I Corinthians 16:1- "Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I
have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.".

I Corinthians 16:2-
"Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come."

1- GIVING IS A CHURCH ORDER.
1 Cor. 16:1- "as I have given order to the
Churches."

2- GIVING IS A CHOSEN ORDER.
1 Cor. 16:2- "first day of the week."

3- GIVING IS A CENSORED ORDER.
1 Cor. 16:2- "every one of you".

4- GIVING IS A CERTIFIED ORDER.
1 Cor. 16:2- "as God hath prospered
him,"

5- GIVING IS A CLOSING ORDER.
1 Cor. 16:2- "that there be no gatherings
when I come".

CONCLUSION:

MY OPINION:
I am of the opinion that churches and pastors would be better served if they taught people to listen to God rather than impose a 10 % Demand system on them called tithing.

Believers instructions for giving to God's work:
God gives the New Testament believer specific instructions on how to go about supporting His work in 2 Corinthians 9:7-
"Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver."

1- How much to give.
2 Cor. 9:7- "every man according as he purposeth in his heart".

2- What attitude to have in giving.
2 Cor. 9:7- "not grudgingly".

3- Without a Demand.
2 Cor. 9:7- "or of necessity".

If you will try it God's way , I believe you will find that everything works better !
