THE SIN OF NUMBERING
Acts 2:47
By Preacher James Tyson

1- MAN'S EFFORTS EQUAL PRIDE.
This message is not always a popular theme but it is high time somebody SPOKE up and SPELLED out the sin of advertising how many converts your church had or how many professions you had in order to look big to the religious community. God's word said in Proverbs 16:18- "pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall" and that is where many are living, at this time in church history.

I remember some years ago when we were pastoring a small mission church in Alaska, a news letter came from a missionary in Mexico bragging about having 6,000 souls saved the previous year. The truth is the majority of those were no where to be found the next year.

2- THOSE ADDED BY THE LORD EQUAL BLESSING.
Acts 2:47
-
"And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved."
When God adds them, they STAY but when we add them they STRAY.

Churches advertising in a well known religious paper tell us they are "The fastest growing Sunday school" in their particular domain with a picture of the beautiful building and landscaped grounds along with the Pastor showing himself standing so pious you would think he had some, "greater than thou" standing with God who is not please with the proud look it represents!

3- THOSE ADDED BY DISOBEDIENCE EQUAL JUDGMENT.
This reminds me of the sin of King David for Numbering the children of Israel. You say Preacher, what is wrong with it ? GOD told him not to do it, that is what is wrong with it. Because of the sin of numbering GOD'S people, David fell into Satan's trap. Look at
First Chronicles Chapter 21:1-2 "And Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel."

You say Preacher what is the sin? The sin was disobedience to GODS word. GOD wanted David as Israel's leader to show faith in GOD for his and the people's needs regardless of how large or small a congregation they were and it is just like old Satan to question GOD'S methods and his word.
In 1 Chronicles chapter 21 and verse one notice how the Devil works:

(1)- THE PROCESS OF SATAN-
Against the people of GOD.
He is always against the people of God and will be until Jesus cast him into the lake of fire for eternity.

I Chronicles 21:1- "And Satan stood up against Israel,..."

(2)- THE PROVOCATION OF SATAN-
Against the Man of GOD.
Satan's number one top priority has been and will continue to be trying to destroy God's Anointed!

I Chronicles 21:2- "and provoked David to number Israel".

(3)- THE PRACTICE OF SATAN-
Against the leadership.
He caused the next in command to fall along with the King. He will do the same in God ordained churches today.
I-Chronicles 21:3- "And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?"
Joab argued with David about doing that which he knew was wrong but David insisted on going ahead with it anyway.

Satan Stood up against the people of Israel and that is always what Satan does; he opposes everything GOD ordained and seeks the downfall of faithful people.

The devil would have GOD'S people think that everything the pastor tells them is Gospel when there is no chapter and verse for it. GOD'S people
are commanded to know His Word and refuse things contrary to it. We need to check God's word to see if it is true on every subject that comes up!
ACTS
7:11- "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so".

(A)- Satan provoked God's anointed into disobedience.
(B)- Satan prodded David to disobey God and Number Israel.
(C)- David persuaded Joab to sin.

A Pastor who leads his people out of the will of God will cause the whole camp to sin.
1- Chronicles 21:2-
"And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it".

It is sad when GOD'S people follow a leader into disobedience. The whole camp has to pay for the sin. Read 1-Chronicles 21:4-7 and in verse eight David realizes sin is at the door and seeks forgiveness but GOD in verse nine spake unto Gad, David's sear, giving David three choices for the punishment of his sin.

I-Chronicles 21:9-10- "And the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying, Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee".

(1)- FIRST CHOICE.
THREE YEARS OF FAMINE.

(2)- SECOND CHOICE.
THREE MONTHS OF DESTRUCTION BY HIS ENEMIES.

(3)-THIRD CHOICE.
THREE DAYS OF THE SWORD OF The LORD.

CONCLUSION:

Disobedience always brings judgment.
I-Chronicles 21:13-
"And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.".
He made a wise choice but it cost him dearly. Verse fourteen, GOD sent a pestilence that Killed SEVENTY THOUSAND MEN and more devastation was on the way but a merciful GOD called off the angel of destruction in verse fifteen.

The bottom line is that GOD doesn't want our strength to be in numbers- let GOD give the increase and be satisfied with the results. Galatians 6:14-"But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world". It is our commission to seek sinners but let GOD sort them out and number them in The Lambs Book of Life. I am persuaded GOD is going to give greater rewards to some small time preacher or missionary in isolated places with less people to work with than those who have the multitudes before them.
