THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD
Psalms 23

Psalms 23 can be broken down into three catagories:

Verse 1- reveals the Lord as my Saviour.
Verses 2&3- reveal the Lord as my Supplier.
Verses 4-7- reveal the Lord as my Security.

23:1
- "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want".
23:2- "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters".
23:3- "He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name sake".
23:4- "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me".
23:5- "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over".
23:6- "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever".

1- Psalms 23:1- My Saviour.
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD.

The word "My" represents a personal experience. It doesn't help if he is someone else's shepherd if you do not know him as your personal shepherd! You have to make the Lord your Shepherd before moving on to verse 2 because God will not be your Supplier or your Security as the remainder of the Psalm reveals until you are His sheep in a very literal sense. John 10:27- "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish".

2- Psalms 23:2- My Supplier.
(A)-He Feeds Us With An Abundance Of Food.

HE MAKETH ME TO LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES.

The Hebrew word for green is deh'-sheh which means a ready supply of tender grass. It is not just any grass but tender grass which is representative of what we like to eat. What a great lesson we have here about our shepherd being the supplier of food for our body as well as the supplier of other needs. A sheep that is filled and satisfied will lie down in the grass while digesting his food. What a great picture of the satisfying and filling of God's word and the comfort of knowing we are in His care!

3- Psalms 23:2- My Supplier.
(B)-He Quenches Our Thrist. They that hunger and thirst after righteousness shall be filled.
HE LEADETH ME BESIDE THE STILL WATERS.
The Hebrew word for "Still" is naw-hal'  which means A watering place. God not only supplies our necessary food but he supplies pools of living waters to satisfy our thirst. The application here could be physical nurturing as well as spiritual refreshing.

4- Psalms 23:3- My Security.
(A)-Even When Life is a Mess.
HE RESTORETH MY SOUL.
The Hebrew word for restoreth is Shoob and it means to recover. What a wonderful
thought to know that the Lord is in the recovery business. If a Christian goes astray God is there to recover his sheep. 1 John 2:1- " My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if and man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous":
We have a picture here that reminds us of a wrecked automobile that needs to be recovered and taken to a body shop for restoration after which it is placed back into service.
If your life is a wreck, God is in the recovery and restoration business if only you will turn your broken and out of service life over to Him. Many times a wrecked automobile is totaled out and destroyed but God never has a case too hard for Him to restore. Give your heart and your life to Him today and He will make you a new person!

5- Psalms 23:3- My Security.
(B)-In The Good Times.
HE LEADETH ME IN PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

The Hebrew word for leadeth is naw-shab' which means to govern. The bible teaches us that the steps of a good man are ordered of the Lord. It is wonderful that we can expect the Lord to govern our lives if only we will submit our every care to him. You can not be led by the Lord until you are in submission to him.
Proverbs 3:6- "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths".

6- Psalms 23:4- My Security.
(C)-During Times Of Trouble.
YEA, THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY.
The Hebrew word for valley is gah'-ee which means a narrow gorge with steep cliff's. I will fear no evil for thou art with me: All this is wonderful because it tells us that the Shepherd guides his sheep across the narrow gorges of life with their steep cliff's and the sheep's life is protected from a fall that would be certain death. It is comforting to know that we need to have no fear in life as we serve him or in death as he is still with us.

7- Psalms 23:6- My Security.
(D)-During Prosperity.
GOODNESS AND MERCY SHALL FOLLOW ME.
The Hebrew word for Goodness is tobe which means prosperity. The apostle Paul said, I will that ye prosper and be in good health. God wants his sheep to prosper. The word for mercy is kheh'-sed and means loving kindness. God shows his sheep this loving kindness each and every day of our lives.

8- Psalms 23:6 My Security.
(E)-For all Eternity. We are sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption.

I WILL DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD FOREVER.

The Hebrew word for dwell is yaw-shab' and means to inhabit. God's sheep are going to inhabit the house of the Lord forever. The Hebrew word for house is bah'-yith and means temple. God's house is his holy temple and we are going to inhabit it forever. What a Shepherd we have!
