The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Psalms 9:17

Just how bad do you have to be to go to Hell ?
Psalms 9:17- "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God ". The thought is not how bad you might be but what you do with Jesus.

This question has been a concern for many people, going all the way back to Adam and Eve. Revelation 21:8 list eight groups of people who are so bad that you would expect to find them in Hell. I want to list them as well as do a Greek word study, in order that we do not miss the meaning of the words. I believe in the inerrancy of God's written Word and its plenary inspiration; (It is all inspired- not just bits and pieces of it) with the 1611 king James translation being superintended by the Holy Spirit for the English speaking people!

Rev. 21:8-
"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whore mongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

(1)- The Fearful.
Greek word is di-los'
  - from the word deos meaning dreadful or timid.

(2)- The unbelieving.
Greek word is
Api'-is-tos - meaning without trust in God.

(3)-The abominable.
Greek word is
bdel-oos'-so - which means to abhor or detest because of the stench of sin.

(4)- murderers.
Greek word is fon-yooce'
- meaning an assassin - a cut throat.

(5)- whoremongers.
Greek word is por'-nos - from which we get the word pornography.  a man who prostitutes his body to another’s lust for hire. A male prostitute - a gay person  or a homosexual person.

These perversions are the reason God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrow and it is a sin that God will not tolerate. Our society wants to give them the same rights as every one else but God will not have them in his presence! You say, preacher I thought God loved all sinners, Yes that is true but we often fail to separate the fact that God loves sinners but he detest their sin and He will not overlook sin or excuse it! It must be judged and if a person ends up at this judgment in the book of Revelation; having spurned the saving grace of almighty God, their end is hell for all eternity!

(6)- sorcerers.
Greek word
far-mak-yoos' - meaning a spell giving drug. Does that sound familiar with all the drug problems that are so deeply rooted into our society? God hates drugs and the ruined lives it produces. All the sexually transmitted diseases and needle transmitted diseases associated with them God also hates and it is no wonder Drug abusers are
high up on the list of those who will inhabit a place called hell for all eternity.

(7)- idolaterers.
Greek word  I-do-lol-at'-race meaning one who worships false gods- one who worships material goods. That sounds quite familiar with all the false religions of the world  and the materialistic worshippers from stock brokers to big oil companies who could care less if their greed causes you and I enormous hardship in buying their products.

(8)- all liars.
Greek word psyoo-dace'  - meaning a deceitful person with false pretensions.

Members of the gang culture often remark that someone they know is "The badest person they knew". I wouldn't want to go to hell and spend eternity with all these bad people for sure!

Just how good do you have to be to go to
heaven ?

(1)- Matthew 19:16- "What good thing shall I do".
It is a common thought by most people that if you are good, you will go to heaven. Friend, you need to check out Gods meaning of good before you reach a final conclusion. For instance; the rich young ruler in Matthew chapter 19 was a good man but Jesus told him he lacked what it takes to go to heaven. It is not so much how good you might be but what you do with Jesus.

Let us look at the scripture in Mat.19:16-19 to see how good you need to be to go to Heaven:

Mat. 19:16- "And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?"
Mat. 19:17- "And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments."
Mat. 19:18- "He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,"
Mat. 19:19- "Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

The man came to Jesus with a very important question in Matthew 19:16- "Good master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life"?  He was asking the right question and every one must face that question before they will ever go to heaven but he mistakenly thought it was measured by his merits of goodness!

(2)- Jesus wanted him to measure himself against the word of God.
Jesus said, "if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments”.  And Jesus gave him a list of commandments to keep in Matthew 19:18: which was a list of things to show him that he needed more than human goodness to go to heaven because we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God.

Matthew 19:18.
(A)- Thou shalt do no murder.

(B)- Thou shalt not commit adultery.

(C)- Thou shalt not steal.

(D)- Thou shalt not bear false witness.

(E)- Honor thy father and thy mother.

(F)- Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

(3)- The young man was not convinced that he had done enough and told Jesus that he had kept all those from his youth up and ask the ever important question: "What lack I yet"? Have you ever wondered what is keeping you from Going to heaven?

The young man was a good person but he had a love for possessions that sent him away to an eternity with out Christ. There is nothing wrong with you having wealth but there is something wrong with wealth having you!

The man was told to go and sell all his possessions and distribute it amongst the poor and to take up his cross and follow Jesus but look what he did in verse 22- he went away sorrowful because he had great possessions. You see, the problem was not the possessions but the fact that he loved possessions more that he loved God. He was willing to forfeit his eternal soul for a few lousy possessions. Many are going in the same direction as we speak. Good is not good enough for heaven! Church pews are loaded with well intended people who are going to the same place the bad people are going because they both have the same problem of not surrendering their hearts to a loving God!

The ugly truth is that neither the Bad or the Good go to heaven in their natural state. You see, Adam ruined that for all mankind by bringing sin into the human experience. The bible tells us in romans 5:12- "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned":  But there is hope as we will see a little later in the message.

The demon possessed man in Luke 8:35 was ugly until he met Jesus!

Luke 8:35- "Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid".

He lived in the caves called the gadarenes and he came out naked and cursed every passer-by and would cut himself until he was a bloody mess until one day Jesus came by and summoned him after which Jesus cast out the devils. The next thing was when the disciples found the once demon possessed man; he was sitting at Jesus feet, clothed and in his right mind.

It doesn't matter how ugly a person may be; Jesus can make the vilest sinner clean! Romans 5:20- "But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound"! Friend, if you are not saved, please let Gods only Son give you eternal life by you confessing your sin and asking Christ to be merciful to you a sinner and to save you for Jesus sake and if you do this He will write your name in the book of life in heaven. You will forever be a child of God. Get into a good bible believing church and follow the Lord in believers baptism as you continue to grow in grace and knowledge.
