I Timothy 2:9 

This is a subject I am reluctant to address because I know from experience where it can lead. I took a stand more than 30 years ago based on what Bible knowledge I learned as a newly born again child of God on the subject of dress codes. Mostly what I based my position on as a young preacher was from other Baptist Preachers and a few verses to back up the position. Since that time I graduated from a Fundamental Baptist Bible College and served on the Mission field in Alaska as a Baptist Church Missionary Pastor. I launched a campaign in that first pastoral experience on Biblical separation which included how God expects his people to dress with emphasis on women dressing appropriately and for men and husbands setting an example as the family sought to grow in grace and knowledge of the Lord.

The subject led to more rebellion than I ever imagined possible. It wound up being bashed back and forth in the local newspaper with my focus on showing people that disobedience to God's law results in judgment for the unsaved  and chastisement for the child of God. I tried to handle the subject as delicately as a newly instituted Preacher could but the end result was open condemnation from other non Baptist church leaders and even a split of the Baptist work by people who only soaked up enough information to tell me later that I said women were going to hell for wearing pants which was not true. I said Christian women and men for that matter should honor the Lord with the way they dress. Women's Lib was just getting a full force input in this country and some lady placed a brand new Susan B. Anthony silver dollar in the offering plate to remind me that women's Lib was here to stay regardless of what I said. What I am trying to relate at this point is that this subject should only be addressed before Christians who are willing to study the subject taken from God's Word and from a perspective of knowledge gained from studying Hebrew and Greek Dictionaries. Just what is God's instruction to new testament born again believers as we seek to be lights in a dark and doomed world?

First of all I want to go back to the Old Testament passage often used or I need to say misused; to tell people it is not God's will for women to wear pants.
Dueteronomy 22:5
-"The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God". Notice the verse is addressed to men as well as women.

After looking at the verse and trying to establishing what the message from God is; I am totally convinced it is condemning "Cross Dressing". The word "WEAR" in this verse is the Hebrew word, "Haw-yaw/" and literally means "To be or to become or exist as a man" and a man dressed like a woman is acting out the role of a women with other men.

Until recently those who changed their sexes and sought same sex marriages were unheard of but as Satan's time is winding to a close; he is exposing his ugly head in many areas of here-to-fore kept secrets. We see many women these days who not only take on the roll of a man with another woman but dress like a man and have their hair cut like a man. Likewise men dress like women and act out the roll of a woman with another man even to the damnable sin of having a sex change operation. It is just as much a sin for a man to dress like a woman as it is for a woman to dress like men!
A New Testament comparable scripture to Deuteronomy 22:5 is Romans 1:24-28:

Romans 1:24-"Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:"

Romans 1:25-"Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen."

Romans 1:26-"For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:"

Romans 1:27-"And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."

Romans 1:28 -"And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;"

My question at this point is: Why don't Pastors and Ministers ever preach from this passage of Scripture ? Are they afraid to expose lesbianism and Homosexuality as a Damning Sin or what? Jesus said if you want a sign that the end of the age is near- "It shall be as the days of Sodom and Gomorra" and you remember how God sent Angels to Lot's house to remove him and his family before they destroyed those wicked cities of people who tried to break down Lot's door to get to the Men who were Angels sent from God. Lot even offered those wicked men his daughters if they would leave the Angels alone, who he proclaimed were guest in his house. The wicked men said, No give us the men! I tell you Hell is going to be hot for that crowd and hell is likewise going to be hot for our society who practice the same sin!

Now that I have established a fact that the scripture in the book of Dueteronomy 22:5 is talking about cross dressing and switching sexes and with scripture from the book of Romans that is compatible with the Old Testament verses, let us move on to scripture for the Church age concerning God ordained dress codes and Christian conduct for the dispensation of Grace. We find positive scripture for born again Christians in 1-Timothy chapter 2; which was The apostle Paul's letter to Timothy; a young preacher who was given the admonition,"to put things in order" concerning the setting up of the New Testament body of believers, (The Church).

1 Timothy 2:1-7- deals with the newly instituted system of Grace for the body of believers:

1-Timothy 2:1-2-
Starts out by exhorting them to make intercessory Prayer for all men from the King on down. 1-Timothy 2:1-"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;"1-Timothy 2:2-"For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."

The church is told that Salvation is for everybody- not just for an elect group.
1-Timothy 2:4-"Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth."
The church is told there is One God, One Savior, and One way to Heaven.
1-Timothy 2:5-"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;"1-Timothy 2:6-"Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time."

V.7- Paul identifies himself as a Preacher and an Apostle who has God's message to the Gentiles, for the church age; which is you and me who are born again believers. God demands christians to come out from the world and be separate!
1-Timothy 2:7-"Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not; a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity".
2 Corinthians 6:17- "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you",

2- Exhortations for church members in particular.
1-Timothy 2:8-15:

1-Timothy 2:8
-"I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting."

1-Timothy 2:9
-"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;"

1-Timothy 2:10-"But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works."

1-Timothy 2:11
-"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection."

1-Timoth 2:12-"But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence."

1-Timothy 2:13-"For Adam was first formed, then Eve."

1-Timoth 2:14-"And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."

1-Timothy 2:15-"Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety."

1-Timothy 2:8- "I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting".

(1)- That they pray.
(They are admonished to have a prayer life).

(a)- Where do they pray? 

- How do they pray ?
(a)- Lifting up holy hands.
(Which means keeping their lives holy).

What attitude should they have?
(a)- Without wrath and doubting.
(Which means in humility and trust).

1-Timothy 2:9-
"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety, not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array."

(1)-That they adorn themselves in modest apparel.
(a)- That they pay attention to how they dress.

(2)-That they be shamefaced.
(a)- That they reverence God.
People who mark their bodies with outlandish tattoos are way out of line with honoring the Lord with their bodies in my opinion.

(3)-That they be sober.
(a)- Maintain self control.

(4)-That they have no outlandish hair do.

(5)-That they use discretion with gold jewelry or pearls and clothing.
The modern use of pierced gold pins through the nose and lips and tongue and other parts of the body are not in line with this verse in my opinion!

The  key verse is 1-Tim. 2:10- "Which becometh Women professing Godliness". If you are not saved you don't fit the admonition so don't get angry when you hear what I have to say. We want to do a Greek word study from 1-Tim. 2:9 to see exactly what god is telling us:

(1)- ADORN - Greek word: Kosmeh'-o a methphor is, "To embellish with honor, gain honor".

(2)- MODEST - Greek word: Kos'mee-os which means "well arranged, seemly, modest".

(3)- APPAREL - Greek word: Kat-as-tol-ay' which means: “ a garment let down, a dress.   

(4)- SHAMEFACEDNESS - Greek word: Ahee-doce' which means "A sense of reverence".

(5)- SOBRIETY - Greek word: So-fros-oo'-nay which means "self control".

1-Timothy 2:11 is a verse of scripture that puts a lot of women into orbit."Let the women learn in silence with all subjection." There is a lady in Alabama of whom I will not call her name but her remarks were that she was going to straighten the Apostle Paul out when she gets to heaven. In the first place; no one but almighty God has any authority to question Paul and for sure no one will straighten him out! Paul's letters and epistles are God breathed and God ordained and we can either say, amen or O'Me!

(6)- SILENCE is the Greek word: hoop-ot-ag-ay' which literally means Obedience with Subjection.

One of the Old North Carolina Mountain Preachers remarked one day during a message he preached at another Pastors Church: " Brother Bob, I understand the Bible teaches a man's wife is supposed to be in subjection and I am praying that if my wife doesn't stay in subjection; for God to kill her and give me another one". That is pretty strong language coming from a Preacher but the Lord honors dedicated men's prayers so I would not want to be in any disobedient shoes at a time like that!

1-Timothy 2:12-"But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence."

(7)- TEACH is Greek word: did-as'-ko which means to explain or expound a thing.

(8)- AUTHORITY is Greek word: ow-then-teh'-o which means to govern or exercise dominion over one.

(9)- SILENCE is a Greek word that means: one who stays home doing their own work and does not meddle with the affairs of others. In other words: A domestically inclined individual.

All those women TV evangelist think they are doing God a favor but they are going to get a sad awakening one day. There is nothing wrong as far as I can determine for a Godly woman to teach other women how to conduct themselves in marriage and how to raise their children but I question any role of authority outside of her husbands supervision if you want to stay in compliance with scripture.

1-Timothy 2:15-"Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety."

Here is where a lot of so called Christian women get up and walk out. Our society has gotten to the point of probably no return, for the Home being a sacred institution as God ordained it. How can it ever be made right again? That question is one I ask all those years ago during my pastorate in Alaska when I had the Clergy from non Baptist groups turn on me and some worldly women got so angry that they could chew nails. My continued position is to let God do the speaking and let us do the listening.


<>The home should be a little picture of heaven on earth with the man being the provider, the protector, the guide and it's conduit to God. If it is not that way in your home; you need to hear from heaven and let The Lord have control. When you do this, you will experience the peace from the Lord and instruction for your children to live long productive lives.

That by the way, does not give the Man or Husband the right to abuse his wife or children and they will answer to God for it if they do! Husbands are admonished in
Ephesians 5:25- "Husbands Love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself for it". The wife's role is Subjection and the husbands role is Godly love toward her and children are admonished to obey their parents.
