Baptist Distinctives

I am not a Baptist in order to go to heaven: I am a Baptist because I am going to heaven. Many religions believe that people can only get to heaven through them. Then when one of their parishioners becomes at odds with the church, they threaten to ex-communicate them which in their teaching, sends a person to hell. With all that said, I want to speak to you today about Baptist distinctives. A distinctive is something that set's you apart from the belief of others.

1- Being born again is a requirement for going to heaven.
John 3:3- "Jesus answered, and said unto him, Verily, Verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (verse 4) Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? (verse 5) Jesus answered, Verily, Verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God". I believe as God's word teaches; that you can't go to heaven unless you are born again and this is one of the primary  Baptist distinctives.  That is also the reason Baptist obey the great commission of our Lord and send missionaries to the ends of the earth to make converts and to train them to set up a soul winning station where ever they minister.
2- Baptist require a public profession of faith for church membership.
Matthew 10:32- "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess before my Father which is in heaven. (Verse 33) But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven".

God expects each new convert to testify before the church congregation and the world for that matter that he or she is a born again believer. Likewise if a person moves to a new town or want's to become a member of another Baptist congregation, they come with a profession of faith and or a church letter from the previous church and without it you can't become a member of a Baptist church. Baptist like to be certain that you know the Lord in the free pardon of sin before joining a fellowship because too many people have their membership on church rosters without having it written in the Lamb's book of life in heaven.
3- Baptist require baptism or transfer of letter for church membership.
A transfer of letter must come from a church of like precious faith

(A)- Baptism is a testimony of what has happened.
We need to get this straight in the beginning that baptism has absolutely nothing to do with being born again but is a testimony of that experience.

(B)- A born again experience must precede baptism.
Acts 8:35-38 Is the story concerning the Ethiopian eunuch who was reading from Isaiah chapter 53 about God's lamb who was wounded for our transgressions and with his stripes we are healed. The Eunuch ask Phillip to explain the scripture.

Acts 8:35- "Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. Acts 8:36- And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Acts 8:37- And Philip said, if thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Acts 8:38- And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him".

(C)- Baptism by Immersion is a Baptist distinctive.
Baptist believe that no other method is proper except immersion. Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water and came up out of the water. I believe this method is proper and the standard is set for the church age. Baptist also will not accept what is called, "Alien baptism". If you come out of some other church group like the Methodist or others; and request to join the fellowship of a Baptist church; you will have to submit to re-baptism after you make a proper profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. This is the reason the early bible believers were called Ana-baptist and the word means, "re-baptizers" because they made people become re-baptized if they came out of the Catholic church or any other non  Baptist movement. Baptism is a testimony of what Christ has done for you!

4- Baptist require biblical separation.
In order for a person to hold a church office or to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

2-Corinthians 6:17- "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate. saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you".
Beach parties and bikini clad christians are showing up in churches more and more as we near the second coming of our Lord and such things show the world that they are no different from the world. Alcohol consuming christians are headed for destruction with a testimony to prove it! A very important Baptist distinctive is making sure that the world and the church are different!

If you are not living a separated life from worldliness and sinfulness; you can not get God's approval for any kind of spiritual service nor can you get Christ honoring Baptist groups to approve it. You need not tell me that there are so called christian workers who are living in sin and teaching a sunday school class or a song leaded in a church or holding other leadership rolls but God isn't going to let them continue doing it without judgment coming upon them. If they continue without the hand of God bringing them into account; you can rest assured that they are unsaved. God doesn't chasten the devil's children in this life but their day will come when they will hear the Lord tell them that He never knew them and they will be eternally separated from God.

5- Baptist require Pastors and Deacons to have only one living wife.
Also a family that serves the Lord.

A divorce and remarriage disqualifies a pastor or Deacon for that office in a New Testament Church. Children who live at home and are living ungodly lives out of control of their parents also disqualifies Pastors and Deacons for holding that office.

The book of Titus begins with instructions for ordaining elders, (Pastors) in every city with instructions in chapter 1:6 "If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly". Here is one point where many modern churches have become very lax; even some Baptist have gone into error while allowing pastors to have a divorce and remarriage but I have news for you: God isn't going to approve it and he will never bless your congregation as long as you allow sin to remain in the camp!

6- Baptist refuse Women pastors.
God is not against women members but rules are in place governing their role in the home and in the church.

You wonder if you heard me right but God will never approve of women being ordained into the gospel ministry, no not in a million years! 1-Timothy 2:12 "But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence". Every time I turn the TV on and try to find a good uplifting preaching service; I have to sift through a multitude of outlandish women who think God called them to preach. I have news for you dear lady: God didn't call you, he didn't inspire you nor did he suggest it in the smallest manner.

7- Baptist expect members to practice ecclesiastical separation.
Ephesians 5:11 "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them". If you think that you can be a member of the ministerial association where you are in fellowship with so called ministers who deny the infallibility of God's word, who believe in evolution instead of the creative acts of Elohim, those who preach a bloodless message, those who ordain homosexuals to the ministry, those who ordain women preachers, those who get their instructions on doctrine from a board of directors and many more unthinkable errors; you are sadly mistaken and God will not accept it!

CONCLUSION:

You should know what Baptist distinctives are at this point and if you still don't know, you need to carefully study this message again. Get your heart right with God or get out of the ministry is my recommendation. If you are in compliance with Baptist directives and Baptist distinctives, you can say Amen and again Amen.
