MERCY AT BETHESDA
John 5:2-4

Scripture reading: John 5:2-4 - "Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches". (v.3)- "in these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water". (v.4)- "for an Angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had".

Bethesda is an Aramic word which means: "House of Mercy".
The Angel "troubled" the water.
The Greek word is tar-as'-so which means to agitate.
This was the first whirl pool spa set up for the healing of the human body. Only one person could be healed however and others had to wait until the Angel came again and agitated the waters.

I have studied this passage extensively but I am still perplexed by the strange doctrine of Angelic healing for the human body! I find no other indication in scripture where God made it a continual practice for humanity. I can only assume that the spiritual significance is what the Lord want's us to recognize.

1- God want's us to know about His mercy.
1
- We are all spiritually impotent and we all need God's mercy.
(A)- Romans 3:23- "We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God".

(B)- Everyone there was impotent.
John 5:3- There was a great multitude of impotent folk gathered under the five porches of a pentagon shaped building which had a pool in the center. Even the number of porches signifies the grace of God. From those porches people waited for an opportunity to step into the pool after an Angel came down and agitated the waters. The multitudes wanted their bodies healed but only one of those people seemed to be concerned about his eternal well being. The multitudes today are spiritually impotent, without Christ and doomed to spend an eternity without God unless they get a vision of their impotent spiritual condition!

2- We are all spiritually blind and we need our eyes opened.
(A)- Unless and until God opens the eyes of a sinner, they can not understand the born again experience.
Eph. 4:18- " Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart";

3- We are all halt and withered spiritually.
(A)- Money and earthly possessions will merit nothing when you approach God. Getting your physical body healed will profit you nothing unless you realize you need spiritual healing.
Rev. 3:17- " Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked";

4- We all need to make a three choices.
In John chapter 5- The man who had been crippled for 38 years was ask by Jesus to make a Choice.

(1)- A choice for Salvation.
John 5:5-6-
" Wilt thou be made whole" ? That choice was to make Christ his only hope!

(2)- A choice for Service.
John 5:14- "Afterwards Jesus findeth him in the temple",
John 5:15- "The man departed and, told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole".
After I was saved, the first thing I wanted to do was tell others that Jesus had made me whole!
I am a little bit concerned when people say they are saved and never tell anyone about it!

Jeremiah 24:15- "Choose you this day whom you will
serve".  You have to make a decision to serve the Lord and to live for him.
Serving God is
natural for a born again person as the Holy Spirit leads them.

(3)- A choice for Separation.
John 5:14- "and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee".
Jesus told the man that was made whole to live a separated and consecrated life without sin and if he did not, a worse thing would come upon him. God's word gives his children instructions in a number of passages about living a separated life. Romans 12:1-2 and Hebrews 12:1-2 and Hebrews 6:9- "But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation",...

Separation brings personnel cleansing for you and will bring your children to Christ.
Deuteronomy 30:19-
"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: Therefore Choose Life, that both thou and thy seed may live".

2- God wants us to know there is a Bethesda for each of us.
A "house of mercy" as revealed in John 5:2.

(1)- INSIGHT IS GIVEN CONCERNING MERCY.
The old testament book of Hosea gives us an insight into the dispensation of Grace where Christ would seek out a Bride for himself among the Gentiles. Hosea 2:23- "And I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God". I say to that; Glory to God! We gentile dogs have been given a chance to become children of almighty God!

(2)- INVITATION IS AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE.
The invitation is all inclusive. Rev. 22:17- "And the spirit and the bride say, come. And let him that heareth say, come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely".

CONCLUSION:

If you haven't recognized your crippled spiritual condition you need a Bethesda experience! You need to come to God's house of mercy and ask for the healing of your soul. You need to repent of your sin and ask Jesus to come into your heart today and make you a child of His. You then need to testify of what God has done for you as you join fellowship with other believers and present yourself for believers baptism, signifying your born again experience. You can then begin to grow in the grace and knowledge of the scriptures.
