The Tysons', Missionary Evangelist
Helping struggling churches in remote areas
Urging missionaries and churches to stand fast in the Last Days

I want to speak to you in this message about 7 reasons to refuse to become a member of certain churches:

If Members Welcome you with an alterior motive.

My Wife and I visited a rather large Baptist Church on Sunday morning with an enthusiastic greeting at the door by Church Members who were hoping to capture some new people for the membership, and that is wonderful if it is done out of love for your neighbor but as soon as we told them we were Missionaries, their countenance was altered and the smiles turned to frowns.

If the first thing you hear from the pulpit is, We need 12 more tithing
families so we can pay the bills.
Like we heard on that Sunday Morning. We were there to
Worship The Lord and hear some uplifting thoughts from God's word with some admonitions as the Lord lead but our day was ruined by the opening remarks and we were ready to go home at that point!. Pastors, there is a place and a time to instruct your people about business matters and that should be done in specially called business meetings where only members are present and even then it isn't proper to brow beat the people over finances! I shall never  forget the words of Dr. Harold Sightler at Tabernacle Baptist Church; saying I don't intend to brow beat my people. What a Man of God he was and what a blessing it was to sit under his ministry all those years and glean from such a vast reservoir of wisdom. He hardly ever mentioned money and yet people gave abundantly and hundreds of missionaries were supported at the same time.

If the pastor expects missionaries to raise support for their ministry and bring his church 10% of it.

Please see my sermon: "Christian giving and The Truth About Tithing". My question
is: How can a missionary teach his people to support the church they are building if the Missionary sends his support to a distant, so called home church that his people know nothing about. Pastors, please wake up! Get real! Give me a break! The judgment seat of Christ is just around the next bend in the road!

God's word tell us that the man of God is to be ,"an example to the flock" where he ministers, so if missionaries are to be an example to the flock that the Lord has given them; their support belongs to that work!
I-Peter 5:3-
"but being ensamples to the flock".

If the so called Home Church or as some call it; The Sending Church
plans to govern the life and ministry of the Missionary.

Please see my sermon on: "Who Sends Missionaries". If God didn't call the missionaries and the Holy Spirit didn't send them; they had best stay home! The system in place in most Baptist churches is unscriptual. God's word is specific in telling us, I Peter 5:3- "not to be Lords over God's heritage", which simply means a pastor has no right to exercise lordship over the Missionary who has the same calling that he has. It seems that churches and some mission boards think the Missionary has to get their permission to do about anything they feel like doing for The Lord. All this is wrong and we will meet those who do such things at the Judgment seat of Christ with it!

If the Church is in a financial Bind.

How many times have us Missionaries heard some pastor say, "Brother if The Lord is in it; you will have the support you need". My question to them is; why are you in a financial bind, if God is in your ministry you will have the finances you need"? I am appalled at the double standard most church pastors have: If they are in trouble, the devil is fighting but if you are in trouble; The Lord is chastening.

I think it high time we all wake up and pray for God's forgiveness and repent of those unscriptual polices and place it under the Blood of Christ, so we can all move on with the only important duty of the church at large and that is: to go into all the world with the Gospel.

If the Great Commission is ignored and a building program is more important than Missions.

Matthew 28:19-20- "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

I recently talked with a Pastor of a previously good Missionary supporting church in North Carolina who said, "Brother we are in a stringent building program and don't see any hope of Missionary support in the foreseeable future". My question is: what would Jesus have to say about this? Would He say something like; I came into the world to seek and to save sinners the world over and my people are sitting at ease in Zion, having their buildings and fellowships while no one is caring for the dying one, no one is rescuing the perishing until sin and the grave has consumed them.

If sound doctrine is not being preached.

It is the responsibility of every born again Church member to examine the Word being preached to see if it measures up to God's word and if it doesn't, the Pastor needs to be called in on the carpet and ask for an explanation and if it doesn't change ask for a resignation!
Act 17:11- "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."

I shall never forget what Dr. Sightler told the evangelist, Dr. B.R. Lakin when he was invited to preach at Tabernacle Baptist Church where we were members during bible college days. Dr. Lakin was introduced to the congregation and he began speaking about how great Jerry Falwell, his home church pastor was and Dr. Sightler who was seated on the platform behind the speaker said, "Brother Lakin we didn't come here to hear about Jerry, we came to hear about Jesus". The pulpit is not a place to glorify man, it is a platform from which we are expected to honor God.

To summarize and bring this message to a close, we have seen 7 reasons to refuse church membership. Gods word teaches us not to forsake the assembly with other believers for the purpose of worship, for the edifying of the body of believers, for the propagation of the Gospel! To bring the lost to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and for prayer that they might have their eyes opened in order that they might believe and for the collecting of funds to send the Gospel to the ends of the earth. We however, have let the church at large drift into the same character as Judaism had become when Jesus went into the temple and told them, It is written, my house shall be called a house of prayer but you have made it a den of thieves. We in the dispensation of Grace had better wake up before it is too late and return to the old paths.

2-Chronicles 7:14- "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
