Luke 16:19-31

My text is found in the New Testament book of Luke, Chapter 16- verses 19-31. Many of you are familiar with the story of the Rich man and Lazarus. They both Died but they didn't go to the same place. The difference being that the Rich man was not a believer but Lazarus was!

The Old Testament believers went to a place called Abraham's bosom when they Died. This place was also called Paradise below and It was a holding place in the lower parts of the earth. It remained so until Jesus paid the ultimate price for the Sins of the world at Calvary after which He ascended to the presence of The Heavenly Father with His blood which was sprinkled on the Mercy Seat in heaven where it remains as an everlasting token of redemption for mankind.

With that said, the rich man died without redemption. Luke 16:23 reveals the story.

Luke 16:23- "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torment". I want to mention 5 Things about Hell from Luke chapter 16 that is needed in the Church. If this sounds strange You will see my point a little later in the message.

The Church needs people crying out for mercy because there are far too many lost souls sitting on church pews who have never truly been born again.

The sad thing is that the rich man cried too late! If you wait until you are in hell it will be too late for you also!

Luke 16:24- "And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame".
(A)- Notice from verse 24 that Hell is a real place.

(B)- Notice that there is real crying in Hell.

(C)- Notice that there is real fire in Hell.

(D)- Notice that there is real torment in Hell.

If you are still alive it isn't too late to miss Hell. After you die it will be too late!

(1)- Salvation is available if we only ask for it.
Psalms 85:7-
David said- "Shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation".

(2)- God is always ready to forgive.
Psalms 86:5-
"For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee".

(1)- Remembering God's grace.
Luke 16:25
"But Abraham said, Son Remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things," My question is, why didn't the rich man remember How good God had been to him and repent of his sins before he died?

(2)- Remembering God's goodness.
Romans 6:24-
"For despiseth thou the riches of His goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentence?"

(1)- The church needs a burden to pray for the lost before sinners wind up in hell.
Luke 16:27-28 -
"Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my fathers house: for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment".

It was too late for the rich man to get a burden but you can still make a difference in getting your family and friends saved!

(2)- Prayer makes a difference!
James 5:16-
"The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much". If you are a praying parent your children will most likely be saved and follow the Lord! Scripture tells us to train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. The Church needs Prayer!

(1)- The new testament church needs the preaching of God's word! Many churches today have heaped to themselves teachers having itching ears, wanting to hear a pretty song rather than the convicting power of God's word! The Church needs Preaching

I Corinthians 1:21- "For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God,  it pleased God  by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe".

(2)- The old testament people had preaching from God's word!
Luke 16:29- "They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them". Moses and the prophets were the written word of God that plainly warned sinners to flee from the wrath to come.

Romans 10:17- "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God". Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved".

If a person doesn't take heed to God's word and repent of their sins while asking the Lord Jesus Christ to come into their hearts, they will go out into eternity without God or His Son!

(1)- Repentance is no good after death, so the thought of praying a person out of purgatory   like the rich man was asking is vain thinking! Even sending a departed saint to warn people is vain thinking as Abraham told the rich man!
Luke 16:30-31-The Rich man said,
"If one went to them from the dead they will repent". but Abraham told him that even if a person from the dead went to his brethren, they would not believe. Abraham reminded him that his brethren had already rejected the scriptures. Once a person reject God's grace the Holy Spirit will turn from them and they will die in their sins without God or His Son! The Church needs people who have repented!

(2)- Repentance is Demanded but it only works while a person is alive.
Acts 3:19- "Repent ye therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out".
Luke 13:3- "Except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish". It is not an option! It is a necessity! Repentance is taking sides with God against yourself! David said in Psalms 51:1-"Have mercy upon me, O
God, according to thy loving kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions". The old testament records many sins that King David committed but he was a man who knew how to repent of his sins and ask God for forgiveness. We need to learn valuable lessons from that fact even as christians.

When people cry out for Mercy, God is more than ready to forgive Them and save them by His grace! Jesus said, He that cometh unto me I will in no wise cast out. When people truly remember the goodness of God, they will have a basis for recognizing his love and grace. When people pray for loved ones, God will move on behalf of their prayer and send the Holy Spirit to convict them as well as do His part in bringing them to accept the Lord's mercy and Grace. When people hear the Preaching of God's word a change is on the way. Repentance is the only hope of eternal life and I trust that you will ask Christ do a work of grace in your heart today! Ask him to forgive your sin and to come into your hear to make you a child of his. To place your sins under His blood and to write your name in the Lamb's book of life in Heaven while making a public profession of Christ as Lord!
